What's NEW in Mandriva 2008.1 (Spring)??

Mandriva now features hundreds of improvements which make for a quicker and more powerful distribution that is easier to use than ever before.

Automatically identify questionable content before they have a chance to access it, and even manually add blocked sites or content to your filters, quickly and easily!  You can even establish time limits on computer use, preventing children from wasting too much valuable time surfing the web.
• Mandriva now includes the Elisa Multimedia Center, a powerful, elegant and cutting-edge application which gives you a beautiful graphical interface to manage your photos, music and videos
• Support for synchronizing your mobile devices with the GNOME and KDE environments is now built in, allowing easy access to Windows Mobile(R) 5, 6 and 6.1-based devices, Blackberry devices and many Nokia phones.
• The Codeina framework has been introduced, providing automatic installation of audio and video codecs to play media files for which support is not already available. This prevents you from having to search for new codecs to play the latest media files!
• PulseAudio has been adopted as Mandriva's default audio framework, making sound management both easier and more powerful than ever before!
• Significant improvements to the Mandriva software installation tools, in the design of the interface, the available sorting and layout options, and the way extended package information is handled make managing your system a breeze!
• A completely new graphical design, including a dynamic KDE background which changes according to the hour of the day.
• Coherence, a media server which allows you to share video and audio files between either two PCs or with a gaming console or a media center, is now included with Mandriva.
• Customized support for the popular Asus EeePC: Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring works perfectly on the EeePC with no modifications, including wireless networking, native resolution, Mandriva tools tweaked to fit the small screen, suspend and resume support, and full support for the special and multimedia keys
• KDE 4.0.2 is available in repositories. This is the newest, most powerful and user-friendly Linux interface ever designed, and now it's YOURS!

Viral code simply does NOT run in a secure environment, and since Linux employs a far more secure file and user system than the other leading OS, viral code cannot get "permission" to run or alter the system. The only other system that offers similar security is a Mac OS.

With it's standardized interface, you'll find migration to OpenOffice (abbreviated OOo) quick and easy, since anyone who's familiar with the Office and WordPerfect equivalents will immediately notice the similarities between suites.

The OpenOffice.org 2.x office suite includes the following components:

Writer (word processor) - Writer is a feature-rich tool for creating letters, books, reports, newsletters, brochures, and other documents. You can insert graphics and objects from other components into Writer documents. Writer can export files to HTML, XHTML, XML, Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF), and several versions of Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect files. It also connects to your email client.

Calc (spreadsheet) - Calc has all of the advanced analysis, charting and decision-making features expected from a high-end spreadsheet. It includes over 300 functions for financial, statistical, and mathematical operations, among others. The Scenario Manager provides “what if” analyses. Calc generates 2-D and 3-D charts, which can be integrated into other OOo documents. You can also open and work with Microsoft Excel workbooks and save them in Excel format. Calc can export spreadsheets to Adobe’s PDF and to HTML.

Impress (presentations) - Impress provides all the common multimedia presentation tools, such as special effects, animation, and drawing tools. It is integrated with the advanced graphics capabilities of OOo’s Draw and Math components. Slideshows can be further enhanced with Fontwork’s special effects text, as well as sound and video clips. Impress is compatible with Microsoft’s PowerPoint file format and can also save your work in numerous graphics formats, including Macromedia Flash (SWF).

Draw (vector graphics) - Draw is a vector drawing tool that can produce everything from simple diagrams or flowcharts to 3-D artwork. Its Smart Connectors feature allows you to define your own connection points. You can use Draw to create drawings for use in any of OOo’s other components, and you can create your own clipart and add it to the Gallery. Draw can import graphics from many common formats and save them in over 20 formats including PNG, HTML, PDF, and Flash.

Base (database) - Base provides tools for day-to-day database work within a simple interface. It can create and edit forms, reports, queries, tables, views, and relations, so that managing a connected database is much the same as in other popular database applications. Base provides many new features, such as the ability to analyze and edit relationships from a diagram view. Base incorporates HSQLDB as its default relational database engine. It can also use dBASE, Microsoft Access, MySQL, or Oracle, or any ODBC- or JDBC-compliant database. Base also provides support for a subset of ANSI-92 SQL.

Math (formula editor) - Math is OOo’s formula or equation editor. You can use it to create complex equations that include symbols or characters not available in standard font sets. While it is most commonly used to create formulas in other documents, such as Writer and Impress files, Math can also work as a stand-alone tool. You can save formulas in the standard Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) format for inclusion in webpages and other documents not created by OOo.

Imagine a 3D cube with multiple desktops, allowing you to visually rotate it, drag-n-drop apps from one virtual desktop to another, and watch the apps running real-time while you're doing it!
